Dochula Pass
Dochula Pass – located east of the capital (Thimphu), on the road from Thimpu to Punakha, is this mountainous pass (at 3,100 meters, or 10,000 ft. above sea level). Here, 108 memorial chortens or stupas known as “Druk Wangyal Chortens” have been built by Ashi Dorji Wangmo Wangchuk, the eldest Queen Mother.
These stupas were built to honor the soldiers who died in battle against the Assamese insurgents from India in 2003. Besides being a pit stop to pay respects to the fallen soldiers, the Dochula Pass also offers an amazing view of the snow-laden Himalayan mountains and unspoiled stretches of natural landscape on a clear day.
